Full Professor of Computer Engineering
About me
I am a Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where I lead the Information Systems Group. My research addresses fundamental and applied aspects of data and information management, with a particular focus on how complex, heterogeneous, and large-scale data can be effectively accessed, analyzed, and exploited in real-world settings.
My work combines theoretical foundations, algorithmic solutions, and system-level design, often in close collaboration with industrial and academic partners. A recurring theme of my research is the central role of data quality, structure, and semantics in modern data-driven AI-based systems.
Research Interests
My current research focuses on data-centric approaches to scalable data science and artificial intelligence. Key topics include:
- LLM-based Knowledge Graph Enrichment
- Digital Intelligence Assistant
- Symbolic regression
- Multi Objective Optimization
- Methods for managing real-world data in ML pipelines
Earlier in my career, I worked extensively on non-conventional data models and access methods, including:
- Personalized and adaptive data access
- Temporal and versioned data
- Graph and network data
Editorial and Professional Service
I am actively involved in the research community through editorial and organizational roles. My recent service includes:
- Associate Editor of Data Science and Engineering (Elsevier)
- Associate Editor of Frontiers in High-Performance Computing – section High Performance Big Data Systems
- Review Editor of Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence – section AI in Business
- PC member of the leading conferences AAAI 2026 and IEEE Big Data 2025, and PC chair of SEBD 2024
- speaker at the three-day symposium “Global Health in the Age of AI,” hosted by Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and organized by Prof.Luciano Floridi
- co-chair of the first workshop on Data-centric and Artificial Intelligence (DEARING) co-located with ECML PKDD 2024
I regularly serve as reviewer for top-tier journals and conferences in the areas of data management, data science, and artificial intelligence.
