About us

Complex Data for Complex Systems

The focus of AI research is often placed on architecture, despite mounting evidence that accurately managing training data is just as important. We aim to bridge this gap between AI systems and what they learn from.

Who we are

A research group at the intersection of data and intelligence

Our work spans data management, distributed systems, data science, and AI, with a strong focus on real-world complexity and practical impact.

For years, our research has focused on the management of complex and multifaceted information, ranging from unstructured text to semi-structured, graph-based, and streaming data. We design methodologies and tools that support efficient and effective management of non-conventional data across many application domains, from distributed systems to large-scale stream processing.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape computer science, we have extended this expertise toward the systematic engineering of data for AI systems, combining methodological rigor with strong attention to scalability, interpretability, and real-world deployment.

History and Location

The Information Systems Group (ISGroup) was established in 2001 by Prof. Paolo Tiberio and is currently part of the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics (FIM) at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Research directions
